Lean to sew - Create a cushion

Over the course of this six week introduction to sewing, you will learn everything from how to thread your machine to creating a patchwork cushion. We will explore a variety of hand and machine sewing, as well as embroidery and applique in order for you to get to learn the foundation skills needed to set you on your sewing journey.

Skill Level: Complete beginner

Course Duration: 6 weekly sessions of 2 hours, starting 12th January:

~ Friday 12th January| 6 - 8pm

You will learn:

Session One:

How to thread your machine | Using a bobbin | Changing the feet on your machine | Different types of stitching | Different fabrics and their uses

Session Two:

How to iron when sewing | Accurate measuring and pattern cutting | How to use seam allowances | Pinning and tacking your work

Session Three:

Hand embroidery techniques | Practice using different techniques on fabrics

Session Four:

Develop use of machine stitching | How to sew patchwork together | How to back patchwork

Session Five:

Recapping hand embroidery skills | Using skills to make a design | Hand embroidering our cushions

Session Six:

How to use applique | Completing our cushions | How to care for our creations

You will need to bring:

Tools:

Sewing machine in good working order

Thread and bobbin reels

A pair of fabric scissors

Measuring tape

Pins

Hand sewing needles

Embroidery needles

Materials:

Scraps of cotton/calico

Fabric for project (will be discussed in first session)

Selection of colourful embroidery threads

Bondaweb pieces

About your tutor:

Hannah is a creative maker and teacher under her brand, Thimble and Sketch, who is obsessed with fabric and colour! She loves everything homemade, upcycled and vintage. She adores teaching others, gardening and above all else strong breakfast tea.
