Shirring is a great way to get a comfortable and flattering fit in your clothing! Join Wendy for a day of making the Mabel dress or blouse from Tilly and the Buttons and learn about the magic of shirring.

Course Duration:Saturday 30th March, 10am - 4pm with half an hour for lunch
You will learn:
- How to get used to your sewing machine
- Learn how to read a pattern
- How to use your sewing machine to shirr fabric
- How to sew channels for elastics
- How to construct a garment
You will need to bring:
Tools needed:
- A sewing machine in good working order. Please note that a sewing machine that has been sat unused for some time will likely need a service to be able to work to its full potential.
- A basic sewing kit, including dressmaking scissors, small scissors, dressmakers’ pins, tape measure, seam ripper, 2 safety pins hand sewing needles
Materials needed:
- Main fabric: lightweight woven fabrics that gather easily, such as cotton lawn or poplin, seersucker, or viscose. See pattern requirements for quantities based on size
- 1.5m of 8-10mm wide elastic
- Matching thread
- The pattern will be included as part of the workshop

About your tutor:
Wendy is a bespoke dressmaker and costume maker. She studied fashion design and pattern cutting in London back in the 1970’s and also qualified in millinery. She started her career working for a London film and stage costumier, making costumes and has also worked in pattern cutting and size grading for a high street store. Since then she has been dressmaking and making stage costume, historical costume, bridal and prom wear. Her speciality is working with finer fabrics with focus on detail and fit.
