McCall's Pattern M7897 - Vintage 1950s Formal Dress

McCall's pattern M7897.

This regenerated Vintage 1950s design features an elegant, fitted wiggle dress with a detachable gathered overskirt which fastens at the front, a ruched cummerbund (which includes boning for structure) fits over the top of the detachable skirt to finish the look. With two length variations included, choose from a cocktail length or full length dress and skirt.

We love the idea of hacking this pattern into a stunning bridal gown; imagine lengthening the detachable skirt into a dramatic train, or making a super frothy, gathered tulle version... there's so many ways to create something unique.

This pattern is great for confident intermediate level makers. You'll tackle neck facings, inserting a side zipper, inserting boning and fitting a bodice. 

This pattern is available in sizes 6-14 or 14-22. Remember to always check your body measurements with the pattern to ensure the correct size. 

Fabric suggestions: Woven fabrics with plenty of structure work best for this design; look for taffeta, dupion, duchesse satin or shantung fabrics. The detachable overskirt could also be made from tulle or organza

You will also need: Views A, B: One 12″ (31 cm) zipper, five hook and eye sets, one waistband hook and bar set, 1/2 yd. (0.5 m) of 1/4″ (0.6 cm) plastic boning, 1/2 yd. (0.5 m) of 3/8″ (1 cm) ribbon or seam binding (optional).
