Sew a Shirred Summer Dress
Shirring is a fun and fabulous way to get a gathered effect on a garment; making a flattering and comfortable wearable. In this day workshop, Steph will guide you through the process of sewing a shirred, puff sleeve dress, with optional pockets, ready for your summer wardrobe.

Ability Level:Confident beginner/Intermediate.
Course Duration:Sunday 16th July, 10am - 4.30pm with half an hour for lunch
You will learn:
-How to measure yourself for dressmaking
-How to use shirring elastic
-How to create an easy puff sleeve
-How to measure, cut, and sew a garment from rectangles
You will need to bring:
Tools needed:
-A sewing machine in good working order Please note that a machine that has been sat unused for some time will likely need a service to run to its full potential.
-Your machine manual, if you have it
-General sewing kit including: fabric scissors, tape measure, fabric marker or chalk, pins, safety pins, seam ripper
-Spare machine needles and an additional empty bobbin
Materials needed:
-Fabric to make your shirred dress. Lightweight cotton such as poplin or lawn is recommended. Requirements are as follows:
150cm width = 2.5 metres
115cm width = 3 metres
-Matching machine thread
-2 spools of shirring elastic
- 1 metre of 6-9mm wide flat elastic

About your tutor:
Steph is a keen dressmaker and crocheter. She has had extensive teaching experience, both with children and adults. Steph joined the Truro Fabrics team in 2021, and you can often find her in our dressmaking and yarn departments!
