Sewing Machine Skills for Improvers

Further your machine sewing skills with this day workshop and get to grips with zips, stitch in the ditch, and bias and piping to give your projects a neat and professional looking finish. Throughout the class, you will work gain new skills to make a sewing machine cover and table protector for your machine. You will all be making the same product; however, you can choose which skills and features you would like to include or omit.

Please note that a machine that has been sat in storage for some time may need a service in order to work to its fullest.

Come and learn a new skill in a relaxed, friendly environment. Our brand new studio space is located opposite our city centre store in the heart of Cornwall.

Skill Level:Improvers. You will need to know how to thread your machine and have some foundational sewing skills for this class.

Course Duration:Saturday 7th October, 9.30am - 4pm with a break for lunch

You will learn:

How to use a rotary cutter

How to make a quilt sandwich

How to cover piping cord

How to create and/or attach bias binding

How to insert a zip

You will need to bring:

Tools:

Sewing machine in good working order

Your sewing machine manual, if you have it

General sewing kit including: scissors, tape measure, tailor's chalk or other fabric marker, pins, needles and thread, seam ripper

If you have the following, please bring: a rotary cutter, 1/4" foot, walking foot

Materials:

A single piece of fabric or enough co-ordinating fabrics to make a strip patchworked outer approximately 50cm x 80cm

60cm of lining fabric

Matching thread

Half a metre of low loft wadding

4 metres of 25mm wide bias binding or fabric to make your own

50cm zip (optional)

About your tutor:

Helen has a passion for sewing and textiles. Currently she does private tuition, workshops, commission sewing, repairs and alterations.

She has over thirty years teaching experience, both with children and adults. She especially enjoys passing her knowledge onto others and seeing their delight in their achievements.
